About James Cartwright

I help growing Shopify brands build stores that convert well, run smoothly and are ready to scale. With 25 years of experience in web design and development, including ten years running my own agency, &beyond, I've worked with eCommerce businesses across the UK and the United States. I'm also a bi-vocational church minister, serving at Generations Church alongside my development work.

My clients are typically established or fast-growing direct-to-consumer brands, including subscription businesses, that have outgrown off-the-shelf themes and apps. They need custom functionality, a better customer experience or a clearer technical strategy, and want a developer who understands both the code and the commercial goals behind it.

I specialise in eCommerce tech-stack consultation, strategy and implementation, along with front-end development on Shopify. That includes theme customisation in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Liquid, Shopify 2.0 custom theme development, custom Shopify apps in Node.js and React, and bespoke front-end builds in Next.js.

The result for clients is a store that's easier to manage, faster and more reliable, with customer journeys designed to lift conversion and average order value, and a setup that supports growth rather than holding it back.

I work with a small, select number of clients on an ongoing basis, so you get direct, responsive support from someone who knows your business. If you'd like to explore working together, please drop me a message.

Use Cases

Custom Box Builder

Every subscription brand sells differently, and a box builder that works for one store rarely fits another. I build custom box builders on top of Loop that match your exact product range, pricing rules and customer journey, rather than forcing you into a generic template. Whether you need tiered box sizes, mix-and-match products across collections, minimum and maximum quantities, dynamic pricing as the box fills, or rules that stop certain products being combined, the builder is designed around how your business actually works. The experience is styled to your brand and built natively into your Shopify theme, so it feels like part of your store rather than a bolted-on app. Because everything connects directly to Loop, subscriptions created through the builder are fully managed in Loop from day one. Customers can swap products, change box sizes and manage their deliveries through the portal, while your team keeps full visibility of orders and recurring revenue. The result is a smoother path to purchase, higher average order values and a box experience that reflects your brand. It also gives you room to grow, as new products, box types or promotions can be added without rebuilding your setup from scratch.

Custom Subscription Widget

Loop's standard subscription widget covers most stores well, but some brands need a purchase flow that goes beyond the off-the-shelf options. I customise the widget so it supports the exact flows and messaging your customers need to see before they subscribe. This might mean presenting subscription and one-time options in a different layout, showing savings more clearly, offering prepaid plans alongside pay-as-you-go, adding upsells or add-ons at the point of subscribing, or guiding customers to the right delivery frequency for the product. Widgets can also be adapted for specific products, collections or customer segments, so each part of your catalogue is presented in the most effective way. All customisation is built to match your theme and brand, keeping the product page clean and consistent. Because it works directly with Loop, there is no compromise on the reliability of subscription creation, billing or customer management. A well-designed widget makes the value of subscribing obvious at the moment of decision. That clarity typically leads to higher subscription take-up, fewer customer queries and a product page that works harder for your business, while still benefiting from everything Loop offers behind the scenes.

Migration from Another Platform

As subscription businesses grow, the platform that got them started can begin to hold them back. Limited flexibility, costly workarounds and a weaker customer experience all make it harder to scale. I help brands move their subscriptions to Loop so they can take advantage of stronger functionality and a better foundation for growth. Migration is handled carefully from start to finish. I map your existing subscription data, plans, pricing and customer details, plan the move to avoid disruption, and make sure active subscribers continue to be billed correctly once they move across. Your theme, product pages and customer portal are updated so the switch feels seamless to your customers. Alongside the technical move, I review how your subscription offering is set up and identify opportunities to improve it using Loop's features, such as better retention flows, more flexible customer self-service and clearer product options. This means you come out of the migration with an improved setup rather than a like-for-like copy of what you had before. The outcome is a reliable, well-structured subscription operation on Loop, with less manual admin for your team, a better experience for subscribers and the flexibility to keep growing.

Integration Details

As a Loop partner, I implement custom subscription functionality directly into your Shopify store. That includes custom box builders, tailored subscription widgets and bespoke product page flows, built into your theme with Liquid and JavaScript and connected to Loop through its APIs, so every subscription is created and managed natively in Loop.

For brands moving from another subscription platform, such as WooCommerce, ReCharge or Skio, I handle the migration end to end. I map your existing plans, pricing and subscriber data into Loop, update your theme and customer portal, and make sure billing continues without disruption.

Setup starts with a discovery call to understand your products, customer journey and goals. I then scope the work, build and test everything on a development theme, and manage the launch so nothing changes for your customers until it's ready.

After launch, I offer ongoing monthly support covering fixes, new features, promotions and improvements as your subscription programme grows, with direct access to me throughout.
